Strategic petroleum reserve reaches historic lows

The U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve fell below 300 million barrels, its lowest level since it was filled in the 1980s. After releasing 172 million barrels in response to disruptions stemming from the conflict with Iran, inventories could decline to around 243 million barrels. Experts warn that lower levels could limit the ability to respond to future emergencies.

The SPR drawdown has renewed debate over its appropriate operating level. Experts place a practical range between 250 and 300 million barrels and warn of infrastructure risks, while the Department of Energy rejects concerns that the caverns are in danger. Lower inventories could limit U.S. flexibility in responding to future energy disruptions.
